Present alternative to Bangsamoro Basic Law: Pres Aquino to anti-BBL

President Benigno Aquino III urged those who oppose the Bangsamoro Basic Law to present an alternative measure.

In his State of the Nation Address (SONA) yesterday at the House of Representatives, the President underscored the importance of the proposed legislation that will give meaningful autonomy to the Bangsamoro people.

“How many more of our countrymen will have to perish before everyone realizes that the broken status quo of Muslim Mindanao must change?” he asked.

He said, “If you do not present an alternative, you are only making sure that progress will never take root in Mindanao.”

The BBL is one of the priority legislation pushed by Aquino which is hoped to bring self-determination to the Bangsamoro people and eventually end hostilities in Southern Philippines.

The proposed measure is the legal translation of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), a peace accord inked by the state and the MILF.

The CAB which was signed at Malacanang Palace with the presence of international communities is the fruit of more than seventeen years of peace negotiations between the government and MILF.

The BBL, which currently faces opposition from some lawmakers, seeks to establish an autonomous political entity with more fiscal powers and the envisioned self-governance of the Bangsamoro people.

Moro Islamic Liberation Front Chief Negotiator and BTC Chair Mohagher Iqbal urges the Congress to enact the BBL before they become busy for the 2016 elections.

“The failure of the legislature to deliver the BBL is the failure of the government itself,” he said.
